CLIFTON, N.J. — Playing in a band with members from Clifton and Oakland became a way of life for the musicians after more than a decade together.

The Dirty Stayouts formed in the early 2000s with core members Bobby Bobal of Clifton on the guitar and vocals, and bassist Anthony Sidoti of Oakland, along with drummer Scott O'Ferrall.

Each member has their day jobs but always find time to rock out with one another.

"There's a sense of community," Bobal told Daily Voice. "All the folks that come out and see us and party with us, we're all friends with too."

Sidoti never picked up a bass guitar before joining the band but said he knew he wanted to be a part of it.

"We're all just blue-collar kids trying to make it," he said.

The band plays a "cow-punk" and "dirty rock" style, O'Ferrall said. Some bands with comparable styles include Lynard Skynard and Social Distortion, Bobal said.

The Dirty Stayouts play mostly original music with only a few cover songs mixed in for longer shows. Songs of theirs include "Kung Fu Hillbilly," "I Can Fly," and "Love Hate Thing."

Their name comes from Bobal's sister's description of their behavior.

"We kind of live the concept, staying out too late," he said.

The band usually performs a few times a month in the North Jersey area. They have a plaque hanging up at the Great Notch Inn in Little Falls because of all the times they've played there, O'Ferrall said.

Other venues in the past for The Dirty Stayouts include Starland Ballroom, Stone Pony, Asbury Lanes and Ocean City, Maryland.

"We used to be known as Jersey's hardest-working band," Bobal said.

While Bobal, Sidoti and O'Ferrall make up the core, several other people rotate in and out to perform with them.

Their music was featured on WDHA radio and a compilation CD from the United Kingdom's "Classic Rock" magazine.
